Applications
Because most of the AgeAlert™ research thus far has been conducted on specific polymeric materials such as synthetic rubber (Ethylene Propylene Rubber and Silicone Rubber) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), the applications that are developed the most completely include any products made from those materials.
- wire/cable insulation;
- plastic and rubber tubing/piping;
- other products made of PE, silicone rubber or EPR.
The AgeAlert™ sensor can be integrated into the product, attached to the product, attached to the product packaging (or label) or even attached to the pallet containing the products.
The method for reading the sensor can be selected to best match your application requirements. Sensor data can be queried using:
- direct wired connection to the system instrumentation;
- low-cost contact readers;
- remote (RFID) or wireless communication.
Images above: Sensor particles (embedded in outer layer of wire/cable insulation, tire, hose or other product) can be interrogated with a contact reader. (Note: Tire and hose photos are simulated and for explanation only.)
AgeAlert™ sensor tag can be integrated into the product or attached to the product. The passive RFID tag communicates with remote (wireless) RFID reader to both identify the product and display the condition of the product.
In this simulated photo, the AgeAlert™ sensor particles form a discrete sensor, which can be attached to the product, the label, the packaging, or the pallet.
Alternatively, a sensor filament integrated into the cable inside the wire/cable jacket connects directly to a terminal box/reader.
AgeAlert™ simplifies degradation monitoring for rubber and plastic tubing or piping. Measurement is quick. The sensor can be set up to allow either wireless (RFID), contact or wired interrogation to best fit your application requirements. In addition, AgeAlert™ sensors can be incorporated into the product's label or packaging or even attached to the pallet of products.

Initial research indicates that potential AgeAlert™ applications include:
- food;
- pharmaceuticals and serums;
- building materials;
- composite structures;
- adhesives;
- propellants;
- blood and tissue;
- any degradable product that can be modeled.
Further research will be necessary to adapt AgeAlert™ for these applications.
